Stop At: Inverawe Native Gardens, 1565 Channel Hwy, Margate, Tasmania 7054 Australia

The first stop on your eco day tour itinerary is the Inverawe Native Gardens, Tasmania’s largest native garden. Only 15 minutes south of Hobart, here you can enjoy a stroll around 22 acres of colourful landscaped native gardens with stunning views over North West Bay out towards Bruny Island and the D’Entrecasteaux Channel.
You will be inspired by this garden and its enormous collection of Australian native plants all planted and lovingly growth and cared for by the owners Bill and Margaret Chestnut. Here you can take tea on the terrace, sit on one of the many seats and soak up the atmosphere of peace and serenity and watch some of Inverawe's 101 bird species bustle about. Inverawe provides an amazing location for birdwatching, with regular sightings of Tasmania’s twelve endemic bird species including the Forty-Spotted Pardalote.
Inverawe is not just a garden it is a source of insight and knowledge. You will journey into the past and tread where the French explorers and pioneer botanists trod 200 years ago and hear some stories of their life there. You will get an insight into how the Eucalyptus was named and who first mapped the bay, as well as an outline into how this sustainable, waterwise garden works with the environment, not against it.

We suggest you bring a notebook and list plants you want for your own garden, all of which are identified by name. Don’t miss the chance to talk to Margaret and Bill Chestnut and borrow some of their sustainable landscape and gardening ideas.

The tour will then move on to the Avi Fauna and Flora Gardens in Margate, a private garden, which has an assortment of spring bulbs, annuals, shrubs, trees, roses, irises, perennials, foliage, and chrysanthemums (in autumn). If you are lucky you could experience a guided tour of the gardens by Winnie or Albert, who will proudly show off their handiwork. The beautiful property also features fishponds, extensive aviaries, diverse birdlife and a conservatory (including tuberous begonias).

Duration: 2 hours

Stop At: Bonorong Wildlife Sanctuary, 593 Briggs Rd, Brighton, Tasmania 7030 Australia

You can then enjoy a light lunch in Margate before travelling to Bonorong Wildlife Sanctuary in Brighton. Here you can get up close and personal with some of Tasmania’s native wildlife, including its unique Tasmanian Devil, Wombats, Koalas, Quolls, Possums, Echidnas and a large range of bird species. We recommend a conversation with Fred, the sulphur crested cockatoo, who is over 103 years old!

Duration: 1 hour 15 minutes

Stop At: Royal Tasmanian Botanical Gardens, Lower Domain Road Queens Domain, Hobart, Tasmania 7000 Australia

On the return to Hobart, you will be taken to the Royal Botanical Gardens, 14 hectares of stunning plant collections and displays overlooking Hobarts River Derwent. The second oldest botanic garden in Australia, it provides living collections including a Japanese garden, a large conservatory, a traditional herb garden, Peter Cundell’s Vege Patch and rare plants from Macquarie island in a Sub Antarctic plant house. You may elect to join a guided tour by trained guides (when available), or simply stroll through the various gardens and displays. The Garden is a registered charity, depending on the wonderful generosity of visitors, the amazing work of the Friends of the Gardens, other volunteers, and many business partners.
