Cycling or walking through this sleepy hamlet of Nakijin with a local English-speaking guide provides a unique opportunity to discover the village's history and development. We'll be stopping at various points of interest to learn about traditional Okinawan houses, the famous Fukugi trees used to protect the village, traditional ways of life and religious beliefs unique to the Okinawan (Ryukyu) culture. Nakijin Castle ruins is a 3-minute drive and the popular Churaumi Aquarium and expo park is 15 minutes by car.

Itinerary Details

Fascinating local knowledge and village history, this is an opportunity to meet some locals on this relaxed and slow paced cycle or walking tour through Nakijin Village, where we live. We will cycle through the narrow, sleepy and shady lanes of one of the hamlets within Nakijin Village, along the way we will take a look at some beautifully maintained gardens and original Okinawan houses and explain the reasons, disadvantages and advantages between new and old construction and designs.
We will share with you the local importance of the strong and protecting Fukugi (Garcinia subelliptica) tree.
Visit a getou (Jade/shell ginger) plant extraction factory, where the plant leaves are ground and then heated to produce condensation and the extract produced. Getou is a well-known plant, naturally high in antibacterial properties, it is native to Okinawa and is used to make all sorts of facial, skin and hair treatments.

The popular Nakijin castle remains are a short 5-minute drive away and a perfect supplement to this tour. Suitable for kids as young as 8 years old.
